Every minute, 1 million plastic bottles are purchased around the world. 480 billion plastic bottles were sold in 2016. Plastic bottles are made of PET plastic which is recyclable, however, most bottles (80%), end up in landfills. It takes around 1000 years for a plastic bottle to biodegrade, with each bottle releasing harmful chemicals into the environment as it decomposes.
More than 10 million tons of plastic leaks into the ocean each year, which continues to feed the 7th continent which is entirely made up of waste and is three times the size of France, harming wildlife and nature. By 2050, the ocean will contain more plastic than fish.

We need to start taking recycling more seriously, in a bid to save our oceans and beautiful beaches.
Anthropocene magazine is fighting for the waste of plastic bottles to end.
We noticed that the sorting of waste was very partial in our student accommodation and that there were not enough bins. We are happy to announce that we will be collecting used plastic bottles from the Nido Residence and bring them to recycling centers here in London. We are taking donations in order to install a recycling bin at the residence. All leftover money will be donated to non-profit organizations fighting against climate change and pollution.
Here’s how you can help:
Use a reusable steel water bottle
Buy a water filter
Raise awareness
